1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
Chevrolet’s marketing jargon for the ’67 Chevelle SS396 was simple: “The Chevelle SS396 will bring on a severe compulsion to go driving.” The ’67 model was last year for the first generation Chevelle and it is a classic. Styling tweaks included a new grille and large wrap-around tail lamps that resulted in a longer, leaner appearance. This ‘138’-code Chevelle SS396 has been the recipient of a restoration (2020) and is as close to original as you can imagine. The owner states that the engine/transmission/differential are all numbers-matching. The 396ci/350hp L34 ‘big-block’ (many say it was still 360hp as was the previous year) has been bored .030 over and completely rebuilt. The factory ‘closed chamber’ heads are excellent for the street as they flow well at moderate RPMs and produce good compression. The ‘Rat’ is fitted with a Holley performance carb and 396/375 hydraulic Comp Cam w/roller rockers. Factory exhaust manifolds empty into a free-flowing dual exhaust system. The Muncie M-21 wide-ratio 4-speed is fitted with a Hurst Comp+ shifter and transfers torque to a 12-bolt open differential with 3.55:1 gearing. This is a very practical street setup from front to back – this Chevelle sounds and runs great. The SS396 has been refinished in original Tuxedo Black (A-code). Chrome is excellent and accents include SS hood and new Chevy 15×8” rally wheels w/BFG Radial T/A tires. (The owner is also including four factory steel wheels w/new tires and Super Sport hubcaps.) The completely restored black vinyl interior is 1967 revisited – upholstery, door cards, headliner, carpeting and dash are all correct. Features include bucket seats, console w/clock, factory wheel and tinted windows. A set of aftermarket gauges and tachometer have been installed. Underneath, the clean chassis is equipped power steering, manual disc/drum brakes w/dual master cylinder and SS suspension w/front sway bar. A new fuel tank has also been installed.
