Muscle cars were at their peak in 1969. There was a buffet to choose from – compact, mid-size or full size. The Plymouth Belvedere GTX was one of MOPAR’s strongest. Based on the ‘B’ body platform and fitted with a powerful big-block drivetrain, this Plymouth was a perfect example of muscle – to quote the ’68 sales brochure: “GTX – the Boss is back, leading off the all-new mid-size 5 from Plymouth with a totally new skin from top to tread.” Based on the data tag, our 1968 second-gen Belvedere is a true GTX (RS23 code) that received a full restoration in 1986. The exterior was resprayed in stunning 2-stage Red Metalflake with GTX strips and hood scoops. A restored bucket seat black vinyl interior (code S6X) is in excellent condition. There is a full console w/shifter, nice carpeting, tinted windows and a factory AM sound system to provide tunes. This GTX is powered by what is believed to be the original engine (code 83). If so, it is the RB-series ‘tall’ 440 High Performance equipped with a ‘Six Pack’ 3×2 setup of Holley carbs and fresh-air intake. This ‘Six-Pack’ option cost an unimaginable $119.00 back in ’68 and allowed the Wedge to produce 390bhp w/490 lb/ft of torque. The 440 is said to have been rebuilt and appears to be in stock configuration. It is backed by a Chrysler 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Factory automatic GTXs were equipped with a MOPAR 8-3/4” Suretrac differential and 3.23:1 gears. The chassis is fitted with manual steering and manual 4-wheel drum brakes w/dual master. Our GTX strikes a nice stance with torsion bar front suspension with HD front sway bar. Polished 14” Magnum 500 wheels mount Daytona performance radial tires. This is a rare MOPAR. Study the photos – this GTX is impressive.
